Its entirely possible that the original Oldham coupling was a purchased
assembly, not made by Collins or the other 390A vendors.
Looking through the selection of couplings in the McMaster-Carr catalog
I wondered if maybe a bellows coupling would have been used had it been
an option when the 390A was designed. It would have required a larger
gap between the shaft ends than the Oldham coupling though. I don't know
of any reason that could not have been accomplished simply by shortening
the two shafts and leaving a bit more room in that area of the gear
train.
