The Collins 51J4 manual goes on for a page or more about the band cord,
after suggesting the radio be returned to the factory for that
replacement. And the procedure requires setting some dimensions based on
the way it was before you wanted to change the cord, as if the cord
hasn't already broken.

As for drum and cord position, the final proof of being right, is when
the band scales line up at both ends of the range and at handy check
points like 5, 10, and 15 MHz WWV.

I don't have the military manual, probably a combination of the domestic
and the military manuals will give more hints. Some mortal back in the
factory had to take the pieces and make them work for every radio.
