Hi David,
There are a few things to try:
1. You can loosen the panel bushing that the tuning shaft goes through
and move it slightly to increase the drive coupling.
2. You may need to loosen the screws that hold the PTO to the chassis
and shift it slightly if there is binding.
3. You might need to lubricate the PTO as I did in my (older) KWM-2.
You do not need to unsolder the PTO cable to do the lubrication, there
is room within the KWM-2 to clean/lube without problem. You will need
to remove the bar holding the adjustable pots from above the PTO and
then it is easy to get the PTO loose. See:

Having done the relube on my KWM-2, 32S-3, and 75S-3 I can assure you it
makes a big difference in tuning feel and the tuning is very smooth now.
