I don't have an S-3 line (rather, a KWM-2 and 75S-1) but I use a Johnson 
250-39 T-R switch with my old-tme Novice station of a Viking Adventurer and 
original S-38.  It provides full QSK with excellent (but of course not perfect) 
isolation.  If your transmitter produces low-level RF on the transmit frequency, 
that's what you're hearing.  When I've used a VFO (Knight) with the Adventurer, 
the low-level RF does come through into the receiver.
