Try tuning the BFO off to one side or the other (different for SSB and 
for different bands) and raising the audio gain and backing off on the 
RF gain. I bet that will make it sound better when it doesn't have a 
product detector mod or the associated AVC mod.

Its definitely worth something, quite a bit more than nothing, though 
cleanliness and working are essential to value.

 Hello to the list!
I have acquired a R-388, or that is what the TM says it is , since there 
is no plate on it.
It is in nice shape and seems to work ok. I would like to know if it is 
worth anything.
 From what is on the Internet, it seems that most of them are in need of 
a tune up, but not this one- it looks like it was put up for some time. 
It even receives ssb very nicely even with the bfo set to center and 
turned on. Audio is not wonderful but is ok.
