"Modern" speaker design hasn't changed much. Likely the original speaker
has sagged and the voice coil may be dragging on the pole piece. A new
speaker may have a different frequency range which may not be a benefit,
such as extended highs and lows. The open backed cabinet will take care
of much of any low extension, but a whizzer cone will add highs that may
prove to be unpleasant.
If it has sagged, probably inverting the speaker will let it sag back
and work for another few years, so long as moisture or the total lack
hasn't destroyed the cone and the suspension.
