You might want to look at the synthesizer that was in
73 Magazine back in the 1970s.  I have that particular
issue "somewhere" (which means that I need to locate
it).  It pretty much used 74XX series integrated
circuits if I remember correctly.  It replaced the
heterodyne crystals.  Of course you still had to put
the bandswitch in the proper frequency range.
