There were at least 3 of the 30S-3 linears built. One
of them belonged to Joe Johnson, W5QBM, who lived
across the Canyon Creek Country Club golf course from
me in Richardson, Texas (city to where Collins moved
corporate headquarters in the mid-1960s). After Joe
died (we buried him on his 50th birthday - he was
medically retired from Collins Radio with a bad heart)
I don't know what became of the linear.
I do know that Joe had modified the linear to be able
to turn off the auto-tuning feature (the original
setup had the auto-tune operational at all times)
because the circuit tried to follow the ever changing
load when used on SSB.
Outwardly the linear pretty much looked like the 30S-1
if I remember correctly. Remember, it has been like
30 years since I have seen the 30S-3.
Joe was a good friend of mine. My main shack is set
up in a 2-car attached garage with a pool table in the
middle and Joe liked to play pool. Thus, he often
came over just to play pool. I was a pallbearer at
his funeral.

Does anyone recall this prototype amplifier, similar
to the earlier 30S-1 being sold on Ebay to a gentleman
from Australia several months ago. The amplifier was
formerly owned by Chuck Carney.
