Most antique dealers also use eBay, so there may be some times when a 
seller has to cancel an auction because of a local sale.  But, more and 
more people are trying to make a business out of buying stuff cheap 
locally (garage sales, auctions, etc) and reselling on eBay for big 
money.    When these folks cancel an auction or fail to deliver, it's my 
bet they're just not happy with the return on investment they're getting 
and decide to hold on for a bigger sucker at some later time.   Of 
course the eBay Reserve is an easy way to solve this problem, but eBay 
charges more for that, and well...you know how some people are...

If this is indeed a trend, I'd look for eBay to start charging a fee for 
early termination.
