[Collins] 51J-2 bandswitch problem

I've put some notes on the gearbox up on the web at
http://www3.sympatico.ca/kirklandb/

Pull the 51j-2 manual off of the web if you don't already
have it. A j-3/4 manual will do as well.
  CCA, BAMA and
http://www.jptronics.org/radios/Collins/index.html

BTW there are some subtle differences between a 51j-3/4 gear box and
and a j-2 gear box. Namely the location of some holes, e.g. where
the front panel cable goes through and the j3/j4 has an extra hole
 for the antenna trim.

Suggestions:
Don't force it.
Once you have the manual, go to the section on repairing
the gear box. The most useful part here for you is read through
and check out the alignment/synchronization process. This section
is after the section on taking apart the gear box. Reading it first
will tell you what to look for and you will see how the gear box works.

Check to make sure the pulley cord in the gear box has not come loose.
If it has, it may be caught up in the gears. This is the one comprising
of roughly 2 5" cords with a spring in the middle.

Check the spring for the Geneva gear. If it has a hole worn in it, the
Geneva gear may not stay in place. If the Geneva Gear doesn't sit
properly
in this spring, you will be jamming a pin against this wheel. Don't.

Another reason the band change gets stiff, is that the detent gear
(on the shaft with the sun orbital gears) gets worn.

Let me know how it goes. If you need to, you can give me a shout at

Subject: [Collins] 51J-2 bandswitch problem

Hi to the group,

I'm working on a 51J-2 that has a gear problem somewhere in the
bandswitch
mechanism. I can turn the bandswitch with a lot of difficulty and I'm
afraid
that I might break something. It appears that something is binding,
but I
can't seem to see anything wrong. The next step is to disassemble
everything
and I'm trying to avoid that. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
