Greetings and happy pre-Thanksgiving weekend. I'm doing some serious boatanchor thinning and have the following available, preferably for local pickup near Washington, D.C., If shipping is necessary, let's discuss Greyhound. It's reportedly safer, with less handling. Shipping expenses are additional.
Digital photos are available.
75A-4: SN 1917, restored electrically and refurbished cosmetically in 1999 by Howard Mills W3HM. Spinner, 4:1 vernier, 4.0, 2.1, 500 Hz filters. The 500 Hz filter is from an R-390A, adapted to plug in. Correspondence accompanying the receiver when I bought it in the mid-'90s gives some of its background. It was purchased used on Nov. 13, 1965, at Fort Orange Radio in Albany by Henry Kasper K2GAL (with $100 subtracted for an AF-67 trade-in). In 1968 Robert Hankus W2VCZ, who devised a series of mods now accepted as worthwhile, changed the 1st RF to a 6GM6, the 1st mixer to a 6DJ8, and the 2nd mixer to a 6EA8, modified the IF and AVC circuits, solid-stated the 5Y3, and did a complete realignment. In October 1968, Kasper ordered a 2.1 kHz mechanical filter from Collins. In January 1971 he ordered various small parts, apparently for the 4:1 vernier. In May 1999 Mills overhauled the receiver electrically (replacing all Black Beauties and out-of-tolerance components), cleaned and polished the chassis and cans, repainted the power transformer and choke, bead-blasted and repainted the cabinet and front panel (including new silkscreened labeling), replaced the drum decal, performed Collins service updates (e.g. removing B+ from the mechanical filters), and made various modifications. Some mods he would have included had already been done by Hankus (like replacing the 1st RF and 1st and 2nd mixers and reworking the AVC). Mills restored the 5Y3 to the power supply, stating that reliability is not improved or heat reduced with solid state rectifiers because a hot-running resistor is required to drop the higher B+. Two original manuals, one from October 1955 and one from July 1957. No idea which one actually goes with the receiver, but considering the mods and updating I'm not sure it matters. Also complete itemization of W3HM work. Price is $1600.
270-G2 Mort Jones repro matching speaker, very good condition, $225, or $175 purchased with 75A-4.
