[Collins] T-195 Transmitter

John,

Congratulations for getting a truly great rig!

I use the AN/GRC-19 system (T-195 transmitter and R-392 receiver) regularly
on the ham bands, on CW and AM. A few basic things you have to pay attention
to:
Some T-195 units were upgraded with solid-state inverters replacing one or
both dynamotors (the solid state inverters and dynamotors are directly
interchangeable - you can swap out the dynamotors if that's what you have
and just drop in the substitute inverters with no modifications; I think
Fair Radio and/or Baranowsky carry replacement solid-state inverters.) The
dynamotor equipped T-195 needs around 40 amps at 24 VDC (nominal), with a
much higher current draw when the dynamotors start. The solid-state inverter
equipped units require around 30 amps, I power mine from a 35 amp military
surplus switching supply made by Lambda, which is absolutely quiet on the HF
spectrum. Many switching supplies are unusable with radios as they emit a
lot of switching noise on HF.
The transmitter uses a Collins type PTO (even if it's not manufactured by
Collins, as other companies also manufactured it under contract) and it's
stable. The autotune system can tune into a 15 foot standard military whip
antenna, or a 50 ohm resonant antenna system. It puts out 100 W on CW and AM
(or RTTY).
The blowers are very noisy and headphone use is mandatory when sitting next
to the transmitter.

Your best bet to exchange/share information about the T-195 is on the
"Milsurplus" mailing list - you can join the list at
http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/milsurplus . The other list is the
"Armyradios" list at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/armyradios .

The T-195 is a great rig and is fun to use - if you learn its proper "feed
and care"... Get the "dogbone" cable to interconnect it with the R-392 for
receiver control, power and sidetone for proper operation. I strongly
suggest you get the T-195 manual for reference.

Good luck,
