    I certainly would not take an S-line to sea in a  small boat (cabin 
cruiser, whatever). That equipment was just not made for  that type of service. 
However, there is plenty of surplus military HF (and VHF)  equipment available 
that employs water tight seals and is made for that type of  environment. That 
type of radio equipment it can be a part of the 'fresh water  wash down' after 
a trip to sea. The salt water environment is one of the  harshest environments 
on the face of the Earth. Things don't have to get wet,  just the salty air 
will make things go away in short order.
