As a recently retired merchant marine Chief radio electronics officer, I blv
I can comment. On ships it isn't a problem because most are air conditioned
and salt air doesn't affect the electronics that much. On boats ( you
can put a boat on a ship but not vice versa - just to give idea of
difference between boats and ships) where exterior air is most often
interior air, green growing fuzzy things can occur. Cover units not in use
with plastic covers. Spray problem areas with WD40. Just keep a
keen eye out for nastiness and stay ahead of it where
possible. Tube type radios worked at sea for a lotta years before advent of
transistorized gear. The only limitation with the S-Line is many of the
international radiotelephone freqs will be out of tuning range of your
equipment. If you plan to sail well off-shore it would be wise to obtain
ship's FCC license for HF (prerequisite
for HF is VHF radio). Then find out what freqs your gear will work on that
give you access to marine radio shore.
Brgds, Geo
