I think the answer is neither nitrogen nor argon...but smoke.....since
as we all collectively know from thousands of tests that once the smoke
escapes from most Collins components when electrically abused they stop
working. Therefore I recommend we inject smoke...not nitrogen and not
argon.....NOS Collins smoke if possible...under the filter cover in
combination with any generally available foam as needed and then seal
the cover so that neither the Collins smoke nor the foam can escape. A
small drop of red paint on either side may make the ensemble appear to
be a Collins original instantiation and discourage would be abusers from
gratuitously releasing either the foam or the smoke.
Best regards, Ted, K6XN
PS The above analysis was formulated through the use of adult beverages
and is based logically on cumulative experience with releasing smoke
from electrical components and experience with the logic (illogic)
expressed by the Latin maxim "post hoc ergo proctor hoc" which is so
often successfully used by plaintiffs, politicians, salesmen, con
artists and trial lawyers these days :-)

Martin brings up some good points. Would nitrogen or argon filled foam
accelerate electron exchange? What about that NASA-developed "memory"
foam that's used on those $3,000 mattresses? Could its utilization help
me remember the other guy's call letters long enough for me to write
them down in my "...damn, where did I put that pen?" logbook.
Styrofoam, I would think, might cheapen filter performance -- but then,
I'm not a techie.
Dr. Jerry might know.
