I don't have a KWS-1, but there has been some discussion in the past about
open/shorted transformers. The discussion outcome was that more than 50%
of bad transformers were caused by open or shorts where the windings meet 
the pigtail wires. With that said it might be wise to open up the
transformer and take a look to see if it can be repaired just under the 
covers. You just may get lucky!
