Hi Lee:
If you are going to operate on cw then I would definitely suggest
that you get the 32S3 exciter as it has a better way to generate the cw
signal. I can't remember the details but there was an issue with the
32S1 when using it on cw. The S2 series would only apply if you wish to
be able to add more xtals for more coverage in or out of the amateur
bands. You will also pay a lot more money when you get the S2 series of
if you get the 75S3-C receiver or 32S3A transmitter due again to the
additional coverage (which is really not needed as there is an after
market kit or board which is available to take care of that). I have
had the the 32S3 exciters in both the winged (earlier versions) and also
the later round emblem 32S3 and they work out pretty well the same. Now
when it comes to receivers, the 75S3-B or the 75S3-C in either the
winged or round emblem have provision for plug-in optional mechanical
filters. However, the earlier 75S3 or 75S3A receivers had a hard wired
cw filter which came with them so if you get one of those receivers and
no cw filter is in it then it's because it was removed by a previous
owner to get more money out the radio by selling the cw filter
seperately such as on epay! Now the round emblem 75S3-B or C version
are more desirable as they have better shielding in the area of where
the mechanical filters are mounted. Also make sure that the top cover
(which fits over the filters is present on your purchase as those covers
are pricy if you have to get one later...this item is also being
reproduced but expensive). As far as you comments of swapping 6EA8 for
6U8 tubes or the reverse......go ahead and try it but normally the
factory tubes are the best ones to use. Now what I think is the ideal
set up with Collins is a nice kwm-2 or kwm-2a transceiver coupled with
an external receiver like the 75S3/B/C and then you have the best of
both worlds. The kwm-2 series of transceiver does NOT have provision
for optional filters in the receiver portion. I personal use a
synthetizer manufactured by AOR (out of Japan but sold in the USA out of
California) which gives either the kwm-2 series or the 75S1/2/3 series
and 32S1/2/3 series of exciters full general coverage except for a small
portion of the hf band which falls into the I F of the receiver but this
gives you very stable frequency generation with digital read out and
lots of memories....just like the more modern rigs.
A nice accessory to get with any of the packages is the 312B4
station console which has a wattmeter, a speaker and phone patch
built-in. I hope that this was of some help to you.
