Not a surprise. You polished the meter glass or plastic cover too well and left 
it charged with static electricity. When you connect the meter movement to 
ground it deflects the pointer backwards. You can get most any reading you 
wish sometimes from static charge.

Discharge the meter face with a spray of fabric antistatic spray or wash it 
with undiluted dish wash detergent and leave a film of that to dry. Don't try 
to polish it perfectly clean.
