He's referring to using a filament transformer to stand-in for a 600 Ohm
unit.

Use a 12V filament transformer and connected the 12V side to the speaker
terminals and the 120V side to the 600 ohm input.

Field expedient.

It worked for a penniless high school student some 47 years ago.
