Details on R8 in 32S-1: Single section 500K plus switch that's closed
when the shaft is in the extreme counterclockwise position (just the
opposite of a standard switch).

R8 in 32S3: Double section. Front section 2500 ohms, rear section 500K,
plus switch that operates like the switch in the 32S1. That makes the
pot 50% longer front to back. If there's enough room the 32S3 pot may
fit, it can impact a cable or a shield. The added section is connected
in the DC cathode circuit of the 6BA6 RF stage to vary its gain along
with the audio drive on the balanced modulator. Surely it gives better
carrier suppression at low levels on SSB and when the 32S-3 uses a
carrier instead of a tone for CW, only changing the gain of that 6BA6
will change the PA drive level on CW and TUNE.

The manuals I have say nothing about the taper of the microphone gain
pot, but an audio taper would seem to be more appropriate than a linear
taper.
