Did a little more tuning around with the 75S-1 and looked over the
chassis.
I can see how Heath set out to clone the S-line.
I've adopted the philosophy that we don't own these radios, that we
are the caretakers and should pass them on when the time is right.
I've had this understanding for a while and it seems that is why
this particular 75S-1 came my way. It's also how I got the SX-100.
Late last year, a couple days after my 58th birthday, I saw a note
on my company's BBS, a fellow who I didn't know was giving away some
old electronic and computer gear. I dropped him a note and ended
up with a clean, working SX-100, with an outboard digital readout.
When he gave it to me, he said, if I get tired of it and decide to
send it to the landfill, please don't tell him I did that.
This is a cosmetically very-good, working SX-100. It is stable
enough to copy SSB on 40.
This is not about money. It is about taking proper care of a
piece of history, using it, enjoying listening to CW, and in 10,
20 years when it's time to pass it on, finding someone who will keep
these out of the landfill.
I've been fixing Heathkits and other boatanchors, mostly cleaning,
De-Ox-Id, and replacing bad electrolytics and surprisingly, out of
spec resistors. For Heaths, a big job is getting the mechanicals
set up right. When it's working right, the Heath LMO drive feels
like oil on glass. When it's not, it both binds and slips.
I have found only one bad solder joint and that was in the prebuilt
part of the Heath LMO. I did find a missing component.
