The crystals usually don't fail, they drift off frequency. With the S-line
in transceive, the receiver supplies HFO and PTO to the transmitter. The
carrier oscillators are not shared, they are independent.
The first sign of trouble is someone saying "you are off frequency". If
they get very far off frequency then the relationship with the filters
becomes an issue.
