Ah so. I trusted the part number list in the 32S3A military style manual
and it didn't list the 278 part by the Collins part number but by the
maker's part number. If the 32S1 and 32S3 schematics I have are
accurate, the 32S3 transformer doesn't have a tuned primary, and has an
added electrostatic shield between windings. I suspect that primary
capacitor is really there but missing from the schematic because its
inside the transformer. I know I changed the balanced modulator of my
32S1 to the four diode version decades ago and it didn't show up any
problems of impedance mismatch that a drastically different transformer
might have. Comparing voltage readings, it appears all stages run at a
little higher RF voltage in the S3 than the S1, maybe a difference in
lab tech making the tests, or the S3 was being driven to greater output.
