My all time favorite polishing agent is "tooth paste".  That, with a bit of
rubbing will take away most scratches.  With stainless steel, it may take
more rubbing.  And it may produce more of a shine as opposed to a brushed
look.

Also consider "Scotch Bright" green scouring pads.  The are good to do
rougher polishing with.
