On these tube base plugs, never heat the sides of the pin. Heat only 
the end. You don't want to get solder on the side of the pin, then it will 
bind and damage the mating connector. They were assembled heating 
on the end, and should disassemble that way too. Solder won't have 
wicked the length of the pin but will be concentrated out at the tip.

For soldering in the recessed mounting, a soldering iron tip sawed off 
square to make it a blunt tip (maybe with a divot to match then end of 
the pin) would be most effective.
