Since the PTO knob drives the PTO shaft directly, there's only one place 
for backlash, the thread and the slug. Likely the grease has solidified 
(mine did decades ago) and pushed the antibacklash spring out of the 
thread in the shaft. Generally means the PTO has to come out and 
apart and have the hardened grease softened and removed. There 
are some loose pieces that can be lost. But it is a practical 
maintenance item. I'm sure there's a web page giving photographic 
details on how to do it, but I don't have the link.
