[Collins] RF Coils

Unfortunately, there does not seem to be any manufacturer that is still
producing the low frequency slug tuned coils that we need for the Collins
55G-1 reproduction. Several companies, including Communication Coils, Inc.,
JW Miller, etc., have responded with a negative report. There is just no
demand currently for such low frequency coils - 30 years ago, yes but not
now. One company in the Far East indicated that they would make the coils
but we had to order in quantity - over 1,000 pieces!

Does anyone have any ideas? We want to buy in quantity (lots of 20 a piece)
so we can supply all the parts, if someone want to save the cost to have the
unit made and tested. It will drive down the price considerably.

The 55G-1 kits include the cabinet, chassis, speaker, tuning capacitor,
bandswitch, transistor, resistor, fixed capacitors, RF chokes, etc.
Availability of the three tuning coils (L1,L2, and L3) . have placed the
project on hold for the time being.

The values are 138 to 275 mh for L2 and L3, and 370 to 850 mh for L1. The
original supplier was J.W. Miller. The coils were the standard slug tuned
coils with the threaded shafts that you find in many Collins but the L value
is much higher as noted.

We never imagined the difficulty of finding these coils. This is what is
holding up the project.

You assistance would be most appreciated. Incidentally, we are even ready
to give a "finder's fee."
