[Collins] Looking for a 32V HV transformer

Hi Peter,
Be careful if you get a rewound or remanufactured one. I have one
that was rewound to the spec. in the manual which states that it should
be 685-0-685 VAC. The problem I was having with my 32V-3 was low HV (
520 VDC) in the 700 volt position which gave me about 60 watts output.
When you think about it, there is no way you are going to get 700 volts
from that transformer with a choke input filter and 5R4's.
I lucked out when K0AL came up with a NOS transformer and he
measured the actual unloaded output for me. It was 920-0-920 VAC! I
bought it from him and installed it. Eureka! 705 VDC in the 700 volt
position. Close enough for me. I now get a solid 100 watts output up
through 10 meters.
I asked one of the current Rockwell employees to see if he could
check the original spec. He came back and said the way it was written
was that the transformer shall be wound such that it will produce 700
VDC with that choke input filter. We don't know where the 685-0-685 VAC
in the manual came from but it doesn't work.
I called Peter Dahl and one of his employees simply said "well,
that's the way we have been winding them for years". I just thought I'd
pass this experience along as a word to the wise when you try and come
up with a replacement. Oh, by the way, I have a nice original looking
rewound one which puts out 685-0-685 VAC unloaded that I'll make ya' a
deal on. ;-)
