The 2A is desireable over the 2 because you can change over to WARC bands and other frequencies quite easily using the extra crystal deck found on the 2A. You will find that the military used many KWM-2A's for their MARS and other comm needs during the 60's and 70's. 
As an aside, I think some were put back into service during Desert Strom 1 because the "high falutin' " sand state rigs couldn't stand the static buildup of sand. Kind of a nice commentary about tube rigs, no?
