[Collins] 32S-1 Slug Rack Concerns

Gentlemen;
I'm attempting to restore an early 32S-1 and getting ready to do the
alignment procedure as outline in the manual.
The transmitter has good output on 80,40 and 10 meters, but is only about
60% (60w) on 20 and 15 meters.
It is my intention to start with the IF Alignment first, then the Band-Pass
IF alignment and then move on to the RF alignment procedure as outlined in
the manual, starting with aligning the tops of the iron cores in the slug
rack as directed and proceeding to peak the various trimmers.
I notice the slug positions all vary widely from the prescribed
positioning
and I am wondering if perhaps the permeability of the slugs possibly has
degraded over the years and by following the procedure as outlined, I may
end up with worse performance than when I started. That could explain why
the slugs are "out of alignment".
I'm hesitant to start since I have "screwed" things up before, in similar
situations and I don't want a repeat performance if I can avoid it.
Any thoughts would be welcome.
