Hang a fixed resistor, say 10K, from wiper to ground. Maybe a lower
value resistor. Pick it to give you the desired audio level at about 1/3
up on the control. Though it sounds as if the volume control is loosing
the connection from the resistance element to the ground end and it may
get worse with time. If the load resistor (added as suggested above) has
about the value of the linear pot it will make it usefully logarithmic.
