I would not be so quick to "trash" the amplifier.
They have a bad reputation because many people run them "wide open"
Set at a low level it provides just enough amplification and will act as an
impedence converter to match low levels found on S/S rigs.
(I use mine on my 2M/440 radio)
With the amp in place the only addition to the circuit is the switch for the
9V battery.
