THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP ON THE PROBLEM!!! Turned out to be a groung problem, as all of you mentioned. Had a brake in the shield of the power connection cable. Would guess impossible but true. we now have a 8 inch shorter cable. every time i put the 516 on the bench seemed ok till I twisted the cable and there was the problem. put the rig back on the air and also added a heavy aux. braid ground between the supply and the radio, just in case!    
   Iam using the rig with the new AOR vfo/hfo. what a fantastic rig you end up with when using this setup. really moves the collins into the 21th century.
