[Collins] PRC-47

There is an informal net on 7160 every night at 9PM EDT on USB, dedicated to
military radios with USB only capability.

There is an excellent article on PRC-47 LSB modification and other hints on
this website: http://www.pacificsites.com/~brooke/NYH_PRC47.htm .
There is a PRC-47 USB/LSB conversion kit offered at
http://www.dover.netfirms.com/ .

I used a mechanical filter from a Collins 618T to get one of my PRC-47's to
LSB. It's a simple filter swapping operation. Some people add 2 miniature
24V relays and switch between the original and the LSB filter this way.

Do not modify any frequency-generating components in the rig. This will
completely destabilize the synthesizer. The PRC-47 has one master reference
oscillator and all the necessary frequencies are generated by the
synthesizer, including the BFO/injection frequency.

I just looked them up on the Fair Radio web page, seems like a nice radio.
One
question, they say they are operate on USB (and CW). Wonder if you have been
able to easily modify them to LSB (is bfo xtal a plug-in?), or if you have a
"private" 75/40 m USB area for PRC-47 users?
