These generic meters with the Collins logo could have and were applied
to any and all equipment needing that scale. Likely several models of
broadcast transmitters in the 40s and 50s, maybe some ham gear (KW-1
variety), production test equipment, prototypes, and some of the
commercial HF/VHF amplifiers in small packages, at least. The larger
linears tended to use 4 or 4-1/2" meters. One of the fundamental rules
of design there was to pick parts from the existing part numbers. There
was a preferred parts book, that would have included such meters. Makes
for easier prototyping using parts out of main stock rather than
ordering new from Simpson which would have been a special order and
quite expensive to get the Collins logo.
The component specification for the meter may have indicated the first
equipment it was used on but would not have shown all the equipment it
was used on. The only way to find that would require digging trough the
bill of material drawing for every product of that era. I don't know if
that's possible in the plant, and I know its not practical from outside.
