[Collins] 30L-1 with Kenwood TS830 Advise??

Bill......... yes, there are concerns that need to be considered.

In addition to my Collins station equipment, I use a TS-830S with a Yaesu
FL-2100B and I employ an outboard relay to key the amp, and use the 830
internal remote switching to key the relay.

It requires a simple 12v dc SPST relay fed with an external power supply
and the remote relay in the TS-830 to switch the relay in and
out..........
and even so, after 10 or more years, the internal relay contacts finally
gave up and I had to replace the relay.... no big deal, if you can find the
 relay.

For the Kenwood replacement II used an "ice cube style" Omron MX2-P 12vdc
DPDT plug-in relay from Marlin Jones Co . for $2.25. I switched the
original
200 ohm coil from the old relay, replacing the coil in the new relay as the
new one was only 160 ohms. It works fine and a lot cheaper than the $38
each
 that Kenwood Parts wanted.

If you try to use the 30L-1 directly switched by the TS-830S, the internal
relay in the 830 probably won't last very long due to the higher voltage
and
 current requirements of the 30L-1.

Further, I also use outboard relay switching with my S-Line and the 30L-1
or
30S-1, just to eliminate the loading on the S-Line relaying........ that
just seems prudent and helps avoid future relaying problems. It is like
wearing a belt and suspenders..... perhaps not a necessity, but good
 insurance.

Fabricating such a relay control is a very simple, inexpensive project and
works flawlessly.
