With Cory's permission, I am posting this so others may read.
Cory,
Krylon's 1605 Dove Gray was too dark to match any Collins cabinet I've =
seen, old or new. In fact, it seems more olive than gray. I then tried =
their 1602 Pewter Gray. This stuff is a close but slightly lighter gray =
than the Collins Style-Ring color. My 30S-1 was built around 1964/65 and =
is a good example of that era. Its original color did lighten up some =
after using an auto-cleaner/polish. But even after years in storage Dove =
Gray was no match. Looks like I'll go with the Collins paint, but I'm =
glad I gave Krylon a try. It was an interesting experiment.
Here's my tip for painting Collins Logos/emblems. I tried everything I =
could find. Only one stood out as an identical match. For the =
S-Line/KWM-2 I found Testers Sunburst, #52908 enamel, in that small =
hobby-store stray can. This matched the '62 winged through ''78 round =
emblems. Not fortune enough to own the older A-Line's, a more "pumpkin" =
color would offer a better match for this series.
Thanks again for your assistance.

Subject: Update!!
UPDATE:
Also look at Pewter Grey, I think it's 1606.... It's lighter and =
may better match some of the newer units. The Dove Grey is dark and =
matches some of the originals, at least that's what I recall. No, you =
can't put a 30S-1 in the oven, unless it's an industrial type. But you =
can leave it out in the drive, in the sun, on a hot day. I have done it =
both ways, and they both work!!
Additional....
The expensive paint you get from Surplus Sales of Nebraska is on =
the dark side. Again, I think that was the original back in the 50's, =
but they changed it and made it a lighter grey as time went on. I =
would paint a piece of metal, let it dry, and see which is the best =
match to what you have now.....Anyhow, have a good time experimenting.

Hmmmm.... Well Stu, don't know how much of an expert I am. I =
haven't done any painting in quite a while. The Krylon I used is 1605 =
Dove Grey for the cabinet, and 1607 Oyster Grey for the trim ring. You =
should do multiple coats about 12" from the cabinet. I did it in the =
heat of the summer, in the sun, so that the paint flowed well. Coat it =
until it's "wet" but does not run. Let it dry, and do it again until =
you get a nice, reflective, even finish. When it dries, put it in a 170 =
degree oven for two hours. Do not rub, buff, or do anything to the =
paint. It will be the right level of shine, if you did it right. If =
not, strip it, and do it over. ONE SECRET, besides the hot sun...... =
CLEAN THE SURFACE TO BE PAINTED!!!!! This means with denatured =
alchohol and a rag, or one of the electronic "washes" which in fact are =
non-cfc degreasers. Make sure you get one that does not leave a residue =
behind. Do not touch it once it's cleaned. Any grease will show =
through and make for a bad job. I've had them come out great, and also =
have had to strip the paint off and start over. Krylon spray patterns =
are not anywhere near equal to a professional spray paint outfit. But =
then, you don't need all the stuff and a compressor, so it is cheap!! =20
Good luck,
Cory

Subject: Krylon Spray Paint
Cory,
I understand you're an expert on Collins paint. Just the man to =
answer two
simple questions. No, I won't hold you responsible for whatever =
happens, so
long as my 30S-1 doesn't turn out red! Hi.
I was just wondering if you had the Krylon part number for the =
color used
for the cabinet gray. $5 a can sounds much better than $16 a can =
for that
Collins stuff. And no, it need not match my other Collins units. =
I doubt
the fellow who buy's my amp will have his KWM-2 with him.
Lastly, could you just explain how the texture was after =
painting? Was it
shinny or did it need a polishing or buffing? Not too =
experienced with
Krylon products.
Again, you're totally absolved from any effects brought out by =
me using
this stuff. I'm just seeking input from someone with experience.
Thanks, and regards,
Stu Martin, k2qde
