Subject: [indiahams] Welfare messages: Andaman Update (January 6, 2005)

At present 25-30 hams have been operating from various part of the
Andaman
Nicobar Islands. Ham Radio volunteers have been providing their helping
hand
to the Andaman and Nicobar administration and assisting different
governmental/non-governmental agencies by coordiniing the rescue relief
operations locally.

Few minutes back, received a few third party welfare messages. Took the
messages from VU2CPV (OM Pravin Valera who is a Police Official and also
a
ham radio hobbyist from Ahmedabad). He was operating from the APWD
Guesthouse.

VU2CPV reported that another ham station is established at the Naval
Airbase
in Campbell Bay. He is leading a team of 8 ham radio volunteers from
Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

The message that I received from VU2CPV was that- Shri Vilas Biswas and
his
wife
Mrs. Bibhuti Biswas at Campbell Bay are "Fine. They are all OKsu.
This good
news was conveyed to their relatives in the mainland.

VU2CPV informed that Mr. Pramod Nargolkar (who was at Campbell Bay along
with 4 other people when the tsunami struck) from Pune is still missing.
His
son (Shri Amol Nargolkar) went in search of his father. But no luck so
far.
He has now returned back. His father was searched at point 35, point 25
and
point 41 of Campbell Bay (Great Nicobar). Mr. Pramod Nargolkar was
reported
to be last seen at Point 41. He is a Wild Life Warden from Pune and went
to
Campbell Bay for Wild Life photography. He is still not traceable.

Kind Attn. Alokesh Gupta: "Ajesh Kumar, Indian Navy Coast Guard,
Campbell
Bay is absolutely "fine/OK". He is now posted at some other
remote place
under Campbell Bay area". This message is also from VU2CPV.

Parimal, VU3UTG was also operating from VU2CPV's location.

In the morning VU2JOS (Jose Jacob) was operating from a Relief Camp (with

2500 victims of tsunami) in Little Andaman from a place called
Ramakrishnapur, which is 13-15 km away from Hut Bay. I had a radio
contact
with OM Jose, VU2JOS in the morning at around 08:30 AM when he was giving
a
CQ call.
He passed on a message about the well-being of Mr. Umashankar Yadav. I
conveyed this good news to his relatives (Shri Rajbir Singh Yadav:
2680030, 26800300) here in Delhi. Probably Rajbir Singh\'s wife picked
up the phone and took the good news from me.

VU2JOS (Jose Jacob) told me that he is moving to Hut Bay and a he
would be operating from this new location.

I had a radio contact with Portblair (VU2LIC, Ram) and relayed a
government message (from Portblair Police) to Campbell Bay.

Ham Radio volunteers have been providing their helping hand to the
Andaman and Nicobar administration and assisting different
governmental/non-governmental agencies by coordiniing the rescue
relief operations locally.

Many of these ham stations are using short distance VHF (Very High
Frequency: radio signals in these frequencies travel short distance,
while High Frequencies travel worldwide) walkie-talkies for local
coordnation. These stations are not heard here in Delhi but whenever
they have any message to the mainland, these messages are relayed
through their HF (High Frequency: popularly known as the \'Short Wave
Radio") ham Base Stations located at differerent parts of Andaman.

Bye for now. Keep me informed if any news comes up!
Thanks & Best regards,

-Sandeep

Had a contact with Portblair (VU2LIC, Ram) and relayed a government
message
(from Portblair Police) to Campbell Bay (VU2CPV). VU2CPV asked VU2LIC to
come on 40m 7095 kHz

Just now heard VU2RBI, VU2MTQ, VU2HIT (Emergency Operation Centre,
Maharashtra Government), HS0ZCW (OM Charlie http://www.unchainedheart.org
VU2UR on emergency frequency 14.190 MHz relaying messages for Mumbai
regarding the arrival of 'dead bodies' at Mumbai.

Heard VU2JOS from his new location (Hut Bay) in Little Andaman reporting
heavy damages in his location.

Contacted VU2LFA (Portblair) and relayed message to VU2HIT (Mumbai) that
the
news about a flight going to Mumbai carrying dead bodies was wrong. No
flight is going to Mumbai carrying any dead body.

VU3RSB came up on the band and QSYed to 21.245 MHz with VU2RBI
VU2PKY was heard in QSO with VU2JOS

There is a continuous TV coverage on ham radio emergency operation.
Yesterday's STAR News telecast shows VU2HFR, OM Horey operating the
Kolkata
(Calcutta) Ham Control Station on behalf of Calcutta VHF Amateur Radio
Society. This video clip is captured by VU3GTF & VU3FUN brothers at
Delhi.
Just got to see the clip recorded by another friend of mine.
