The NWS Storm Prediction Center has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for
portions of
Northeast Colorado
Nebraska Panhandle
southeast Wyoming
Effective this Thursday afternoon and evening from 155 PM until 800 PM MDT.
Hail to 2 inches in diameter... thunderstorm wind gusts to 70 mph... and
dangerous lightning are possible in these areas.
The Severe Thunderstorm Watch area is along and 75 statute miles east and
west of a line from 35 miles west northwest of Chadron Nebraska to 20 miles
southeast of Limon Colorado.
Remember... a Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are favorable for
severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area.
Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening weather
conditions and listen for later statements and possible warnings. Severe
thunderstorms can and occasionally do produce tornadoes.
Discussion... widely scattered thunderstorms are beginning to develop from
southeast WY into the Front Range of co. Convection is being aided by
dynamic forcing associated with strong short wave trough moving sewd across
MT... and weaker short wave trough moving across nrn UT. Low level moisture
remains sufficient across the region with dew points in the upper 40s to mid
50s. Strong heating is contributing to steepening of lapse rates with mlcape
of 1000-1500 j/kg over the watch area. Although low level flow remains
weak... increasing nwly mid level winds are resulting in moderate vertical
shear supportive of supercell development.
Aviation... a few severe thunderstorms with hail surface and aloft to 2
inches. Extreme turbulence and surface wind gusts to 60 knots. A few
cumulonimbi with maximum tops to 450. Mean storm motion vector 31020.
