Telecommunications Specialist - Remtech Services Inc (RSI) - Craig
The telecommunications specialist position analyzes the statewide radio,
voice, and data telecommunications needs, devises systems to meet those
needs, coordinate and performs systems installation, and assures proper
operation and maintenance of those systems. The radio responsibilities of
this position includes the design, installation, maintenance,
troubleshooting, repair and programming on conventional digital (P25) Land
Mobile Radio systems and associated equipment including the following: 1.
Support of multi-channel dispatch consoles, remote consoles, interconnecting
wiring, data bridges, leased lines and/or leased line emulators and RF
modems, from the local offices to the remote mountaintop radio sites; 2.
Support of digital (P25) mountaintop base stations, repeaters, portable
repeaters, coaxial cables and connectors, photovoltaic arrays and batteries,
equipment racks and all associated wiring required. Work requires (at times)
extended hours of operation, extensive driving times on and off road, any
and all weather conditions, working at remote locations and climbing
communications towers (up to 200 ft.) at elevations from 5000 to 12,000
feet. Support requires the operation of 4-wheel drive vehicles, ATVs,
snowmobile and snow-cat or may require flying in a helicopter for site
access; and 3. Support of vehicular mobile radios and handheld portable
radios including operational checks and radio programming on digital (P25)
radio equipment. The telecommunications specialist in this position assures
that all work performed and all systems are operated in accordance with BLM,
Department of the Interior, OSHA and Interdepartmental Radio Advisory
Committee rules and regulations. Reviews Field Office radio communications
input in environmental Impact Statements and support recommendations in the
Resource Management Plan. Works with other team members and with other
agencies within the Department of the Interior and the U.S.
Forest
Service to solve interagency radio problems and support issues between
offices/agencies as well as with State and other private entities. Ensures
the mobile radio network provides needed coverage throughout the State in
support of operations, fire and personnel safety. This position works on the
design, installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair and programming
of private branch exchange (PBX) equipment including associated telephones
and interconnecting hardware and wiring and office voice mail systems.
Maintains and develops current market information concerning cost and rate
structures for maintenance and operation of the systems. Responsible (to a
lesser degree) for design, installation, maintenance, troubleshooting,
repair and programming of data routers, switches, bridges, hubs, and
interconnecting cabling, patch panels and associated hardware. Performs
initial troubleshooting on office voice and data circuits (T1, frame relay,
E&M, leased line, etc.) and contacts appropriate person/vendor for repair.
Maintains internal and external (government owned) wiring or cabling as
necessary for proper systems access and operation in BLM offices throughout
the state.
