REQUEST FOR VOLUNTEERS - MARCH OF DIMES WALK AMERICA
APRIL 26, 2003 - 8:00AM - 12:00 Noon
This is a message going out to Ham Radio volunteers in Northern Colorado.
This is to let you know that 3 to 4 more volunteers are needed to help with
communications for the annual March of Dimes/Walk America event that will be
held this Saturday, April 26th in Greeley, Colorado. This event is a 5-mile
run/walk that will cover a wide area in Greeley. Hams will need to be
somewhat mobile, although most will be assigned to stay at primary stop
locations. Colorado ARES D10 is sponsoring the communications for this
event.
Dave Butler (K0DLB) will be the Net Control for this event. Any available
hams should report to Dave Butler at the South Pavillion in Bittersweet Park
in Greeley around 8:00am sharp. A course map will be given to all Ham
volunteers at that time. Any available ham needs to bring the following
items:
1) One or two Handi-Talkies capable of xmit/recv on 2 meters (and 440 for
backup purposes).
2) Extra batteries
3) Bad weather gear (should it rain)
4) Headphones (to enhance listening)
5) Any other comfort items you may need for a 4-hour shift - provided that
it can easily be mobilized.
6) Good walking shoes.
Talk-in / event will be held on the 147.000 repeater in Greeley (100 Hz
tone).
Back-up frequency will be assigned at check-in time.
Here is the known event course as we know it today:
Start/Stop - at the South Pavillion at Bittersweet Park - participants will
begin at 8:30am sharp
Runners will head west on 16th Street and go all the way into Aims Community
College.
Once at Aims, runners will head out to 20th Street and head west all the way
to Work Out West.
>From WOW - runners will backtrack east along 20th Street to 47th Avenue
intersection.
At this intersection will be a Water Stop (NW corner of 20th St and 47th
Ave).
>From here runners have 2 choices:
1) Short course - head north on 47th to 16th street and head back to the
start-line along 16th Street
2) Full course (see below)
>From 47th Ave/20th Street, runner will head south along 47th ave to County
General, cross 47th ave and get onto bike path heading east along US 34.
Once on US 34 bike path, runner will go east all the way to 35th Avenue.
Runners will turn left and head North along 35th avenue. Water Stop will be
at the New Frontier Bank near 24th St. and 35th Ave.
Runners will then continue along 35th avenue north all the way back to 16th
Street (Bittersweet Park) and finish there.
We anticipate from 100-200 runners. The event has lasted usually until
11:30am in the past, although this years route is a bit longer than normal -
so the even may last until 12:00 noon. Volunteers have been offered a lunch
in the past and I would expect the same would be true for this year.
We will have 1 Ham stationed at Bittersweet Park, and at each of the Water
Stops (2-4). Also 1 Ham will ride in the Victory Van (sag wagon). One Ham
may be a bicycle mobile and follow the pack.
If you have any questions, please contact David Butler (970-330-5445) or

Thanks for your help. This is a great opportunity to do some community
service and practice our Emergency Communication skills.
