Having been through my share of these things in Maine, where they are fairly
common, I'll add another observation. The difference between a rain storm
and an ice storm is one degree. A few feet of difference in elevation can
supply the essential degree. (at my last home there, the outside temperature
was often 10 to 12 degrees colder, than it was just 1/2 mile away in any
direction and out of the low pocket I lived in). The point being you can
survey conditions in your neighborhood, make the determination that your plan
is feasible, travel a half mile, and be in way over your head in a heartbeat.
I once spent a whole night getting a mile and a half to my home. I was down
in a small valley on Interstate 95 and I couldn't get out of the valley
until I and everyone else helped the tractor trailer trucks ahead of us get
their chains on so they could climb up the other side. This was made even
more interesting by the occasional truck that slid down into the valley as we
worked.
Over the years, I learned a lot about being prepared for these things, but
every storm teaches a new and often dangerous lesson .
