Having been through my share of these things in Maine, where they are fairly 
common, I'll add another observation.  The difference between a rain storm 
and an ice storm is one degree.  A few feet of difference in elevation can 
supply the essential degree. (at my last home there, the outside temperature 
was often 10 to 12 degrees colder, than it was just 1/2 mile away in any 
direction and out of the low pocket I lived in).  The point being you can 
survey conditions in your neighborhood, make the determination that your plan 
is feasible, travel a half mile, and be in way over your head in a heartbeat. 
 I once spent a whole night getting a mile and a half to my home.  I was down 
in a small valley on Interstate  95 and I couldn't get out of the valley 
until I and everyone else helped the tractor trailer trucks ahead of us get 
their chains on so they could climb up the other side.  This was  made even 
more interesting by the occasional truck that slid down into the valley as we 
worked. 
Over the years, I learned a lot about being prepared for these things, but 
every storm  teaches a new and often dangerous lesson .
