The first capacitor I used was a Hammarlund split stator 2-32 pf and
then I used pieces of coax as parallel capacitors. With just the
Hammarlund I could tune from 15 to 10 meters and I made two coax
capaciTors for 17 and 20 meters.
Now I'm using a old Cardwell split stator capacitor. I have no idea what
the capacity range is, but I could calculate it I guess. It has 4 gangs,
but I use only 2 of them in a split stator fashion. This capacitor has a
worm gear reduction drive which makes tuning a bit easier.
There's an article on the ARRL website (for members) about building a
trombone style capacitor. The title of the article is "A Home-Brew LOOP
Tuning Capacitor" and it appeared in the November 1994 issue of QST.
http://www.qsl.net/mnqrp/Loop/Mag_Loops.htm also has a design of such a
capacitor.
