Bill,
Your counterpoise does not have to be outside. This is a common
fallacy! You can run it along the baseboard inside the room, as long as
you are careful about where it runs and you also tape up the far end.
The far end will be RF hot and be a danger to small children and pets!
You can also use a ground tuner and a fairly short piece of wire. Here
I use an MFJ Artificial Ground and about 10 feet of wire! My antenna is
outside, it is about 150 feet of wire, end fed and the length includes
the wire that goes up! I use the ground tuner to get a good SWR and it
has been working for 6 or 6 years!
