You may be aware of this already, but there is a vintage VFO out there that solves the problem; the Lakeshore Bandhopper. It uses the same oscillator tuning capacitor found in the 458, but adds a crystal controlled mixing scheme for 40, 15, and 10M. Admittedly, it's not a CE product, but it picks up where the 458 left off, and many 20A owners used them back in the day. I've had one for quite a few years and I know that Jim, WD5JKO, also has one has one, and other list regulars may have one as well. They are not as plentiful as 458VFO's , but worth looking for.

Unless someone has already put this material into cohesive order, I can take this on as a project when I retire. Adding to the confusion, I see several evolutionary changes to the 20A over its production life.
I think that would be a very worthwhile project, Paul. Central Electronics had a pivotal role in the development and adoption of SSB and it wasn't until the technology evolved to the point where phasing could be done in software that the true genius of this approach was clear.
There's a lot of important information tucked into the manual and schematic that isn't apparent to the newbie, as well as various tips that make alignment much easier nowadays. Maybe an online wiki would be the best way to capture and preserve this information. I know I probably have more pages describing how to modify the 458 VFO than about the transmitters! In time perhaps this effort could be expanded to include the 10A/B, 100/200V, and 600L. I'm sure Nick would have some thoughts on that. It could also be a good place to link information from other transmitters that were derived from the Norgaard design, such as the "Cheap and Easy" and the terrific new designs by KG7TR, all of which provide useful reference information for anyone interested in phasing SSB.
