Just curious, what mode are you testing the scope in? You mention "when you talk" so are you only testing it in a voice mode like AM or SSB? What do you see if you test it in CW mode? If SSB mode, have you nulled the carrier, as you adjust the null controls you should see the vertical trace reduce in size until it becomes a pinprick in the center of the scope.
 
Keep at the restoration, took me over a year to do my 200V and now it is my main BA transmitter paired with my 75A-4. I use the 200V far more than my KWS-1, especially since I added the 160m mod to the 200V. That's where the KWS-1 really falls down, no 160m although the 75A-4 has 160m. What was Collins thinking?
