I was surprised not to see any posting about this, so thought I better
share:
ABC news ran a video clip, evening news broadcast of 21 Nov 13, about the
JFK bunker in Florida. This was backup location for safe hiding during the
Cold War era. David Muir hosted the tour of the modest underground
fortress, with supplies for 30 days and for 30 people. Titled "Inside the
Bunker Built for President Kennedy, Family in Case of Nuclear War".
The interesting part for this group was the 1 second pan of the radio
facilities. Of course there were the requisite military grade radios, but
also prominently nestled therein was a Central Electronics 200V. I suppose
that the one-knob tuning feature might have been important to our President.
One frame zoomed in on the left side of the front panel showing the mode
switch clearly set to the CW position. Apparently our astute President was
a keen Morse operator too! :-)
I just checked the ABC website and could no longer find the video clip. I
am disappointed that they didn't keep the clip alive longer than five days,
but perhaps someone in this group will have better skill than I at finding
this clip there or elsewhere. The radios were shown in the mid-third of the
clip, as I recall. Some quick keyboard manipulation will allow you to
select the frames of interest.
It was quite gratifying to see the 200V being selected for such an important
mission.
