I have just begun trying to resurrect my Drake 2B, 20A &
BC-458 VFO which have been stored for 45 years. I let my license (WA5GQJ) expire
in 1968 and recently obtained another (KF5WFW).
I had good luck with the 2B as it only needed cleaning and a
dial string replacement to come back to life. The 20A presents a little more of
a challenge. The telephone relay coil is open but I’ve temporarily gotten
around it by mechanically switching the contacts (rubber bands).
My main problem is that both modulator transformers are
open. When I first fired it up (after replacing electrolytics and at 117 volts on a variac thanks to info from
this list) one of the transformers was intact but when I turned it on this
morning the other had opened up. The audio going into 12AT7(b) seems to be
correct and the tube is good so I’m thinking it may just be age. The B+
presented to the transformers seems to be on target.
Has anyone had success using a different pair of
transformers for the modulator? I believe I saw a mention of someone using a
different pair of transformers in the archives and I will search for the post now that
it’s relevant. Of course I would love to find a pair of the originals but I'm not too optimistic about that.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
