Thanks gentlemen,
Colin, George
Thanks for your comments and advice. It sounds like you both recommend the
same thing, to try an intermediate amplifier.
Colin, I do have a 30S-1 that I was given about 3 years ago and it has been
sitting here in the shack ever since, not in use, and untried.(shame on me).
I have several other big rigs that seem to fill the high power needs,
especially the AM rigs. With my recent acquisition of some 20As and a 10A,
I thought I might give it a try. I will try hooking it up to my Kenwood
stuff and give it a try on 10 watts or so. I had not considered using an
intermediate amp to load the 30S-1 up.
George, I am, for the most part, a tube junky too, so I may see if I can get
something appropriate for a 100 watt boost. After doing some reading, that
LA-1 sounds like a nice amp. I have never taken any notice to them before.
Jim,
Thanks, too. I just read your comments. More good info that I was not
considering.
I follow your postings on QRO closely. I have read your older posts in the
archives with interest. Given I have three 20A's to play with, I may give a
QRO mod a try with one.
I do have a question for you regarding the carrier null pots, Jim. The
first of the 20As is nearly ready. I am experiencing some difficulty
suppressing the carrier when in SSB. After reading your post last weekend
about changing those pots on one of your 20As, I am investigating mine. You
mentioned the possibility of cleaning those pots (albeit hard to do). Would
deoxit or something work to clean these? I am always a little apprehensive
about liberal use of deoxit.
I have not changed out the caps yet, so I am waiting to do any further
testing until I change those caps.
Thanks again,
73
Donovan
