Hi Donovan:
Something you might consider is the use of a simple intermediate linear
amplifier to drive the 30S-1 to full input. I have a Globe LA-1 that I've
set aside for exactly that purpose. It needs about 7 - 10 Watts of drive,
and puts out about 100W. There are some solid state amplifiers around that
do the same thing, but that could be considered blasphemous to those of us
that are true tube junkies.
In my case, I have a BTI LK-2000, which is physically and electrically
similar to the 30S-1, but uses a 3-1000Z zero bias triode instead of a
4CX1000/1500 tetrode.
One the other hand, if you plan work AM with the 20A, the exciter is
probably sufficient just as it is, given that the 30S-1 must be run 6-7 dB
down from full output.

Folks,
I want to ask if anyone in the group ever tried using a 20A to drive a
Collins 30S-1? I think the 30S-1 requires about 70-100 watts to get the
full output, but I wondered what might be had with the 20A's output, and
perhaps any technical challenges faced.
Best Regards
Donovan
